Gender Parity:
I remember writing an article two years back right on the same day and the article titled "False existence" articulates about the understanding of gender.Perhaps, the world was seemingly on a busy mood to 'book mark' the article for a later reading with a rational view. And I believe the process of rationalisation still continues for I haven't seen any arguments arising till date about my placards on the gender.Right. With the International women's day being celebrated all around the globe,I purportedly want to hung my head in shame, not because 'men' are not given a day to celebrate with but women still are not yet aware about their own potential and are watershed under the pride protection of men. Then why there exist a reason for me dropping a sad face about this watershed achievement?? Because I would like to add a phrase to my earlier statement, "under the protection of 'few/many' shameless men".Having declared my stand on manhood, I would like to dedicate this article to all women whom I have come across at various stages of my life till date.In particular I dedicate this post of mine to the lady to whom I owe the rest of my life.Controversy:
The recent happenings in my mother nation and the mixed responses that flow from various members of the society tells us one clear thing.'Patriarchy' is prevalent in a predominant way and less/no men regret it.The reader can appreciate my view by looking upon 'society' as a whole entity wherein man enjoys certain exclusive rights over woman.Hold your argumentative view about the moral values and the scenario of the current generation for the last segment of this article ,I shall share my views on the same.Restricting our limit to India alone we may say that ,'Yes' men enjoy certain exclusive rights over women not under the purview of law but under the ambit of his liberal(!) mind.Certainly,if this liberal Patriarchy mind is meant for the rightful existence of the other gender then my spending of two hours will be onto focus some other social issue. But taking NO as the answer let's focus.Mindset:
"A girl is far more responsible for a rape than a boy"-Those were the exact words of the convict in the recently awakened " India's daughter" documentary. Let's for the time being, restrict ourselves to the civil cases rather than the criminal ones. From my perception, the criminal offences recently are under heated arguments and no sooner will be a solution reached by the recently awakened society. So let's restrict ourselves to deal with the civil arguments wherein the mindset of men forms the base for any kind of abuse( except sexual abuse).I have come across a number of personal incidents in my life where Patriarchy is upheld by women. For instance I can quote my own family, where ,though the bread winner was my mother, the presence of my father was later required in the middle of my adolescence to give protection from the so called 'unsafe/abusive society'.This scenario is the case for the majority of Indian families, whereas there exists another scenario where the guarantor and the bread winner of the family is a female and the presence of a man is not needed under the security genre but it is mandated under the norms of tradition. Thus if both the scenarios are put together for a collective vote, one may reach a conclusion that India ,a culture dominating country, certainly provides upper hand for men for the family existence. But the point now to be concerned is the extension of this upper hand over the other gender. How far this extension have reached??
Now as we move on to the subject of this extension, there is an off balance happening. This off balance is now Universal. My argument on the civil cases considering only the Indian society was on a purpose as my mother nation has a highly linked traditional value for Patriarchy with the rightful purpose. But yes of course, this traditional value now is slowly getting disintegrated with the misunderstood western concept. Now, the extension of this upper hand is very much evident from the statement made by the convict in the recently awakening issue of "India's daughter".Th act was ruthless and the irony behind it was ,that no sign of guilt was evident in the visuals of the convict. The concept of rape is not a differentiated daily phenomena was the view provided by the statements of the convict as well as the other personalities of the "little running society" who were the forecast of the documentary. This is really a threatening side for the future generation and the concept of sustainability is applicable to the society conditions too.And the worst hit of this threatening sign are the "little runners" of the society and the lower middle class. The other two classes namely the upper class and the upper middle class however are under the purview of this threat but the scale of violence is domestic or rather matter of dignity rather than life.No matter what ,all the runners of the society are affected by this extension of upper hand but the quantum of measure or rather the cases reported in lime light varies.
An accepted Thunderbolt
I wasn't willing to write about the featured points that were out in the recent controversial documentary but now I am forced to if I am to frame a conscious stand on this issue."The 15 or 20 minutes of the incident I was driving the bus. They switched off the lights. The girl was screaming 'Help Help'.They hit her and dragged her to the back and then..."These were the exact statements given by the convict and I personally prefer to skip through the remaining context of his speech for I was not able to bear it beyond an extent. Now,on an outrageous mood the reader may immediately think about the brutal punishment to the convicts and if any future cases(I pray there not be any) be put down with a striking example of the brutal punishment that should be awarded. But,in practicality, this is not the right way for uprooting this extension of the upper hand.
My opinion
Having now actually entered into the field of social activism and with an aspiration of becoming a civil servant,I am provided with numerous platforms to share my views. And the same which when shared with my fellow aspirants and a few top personalities of the activist society gave me an ample scope of thought to be worked upon the curbing of this extensive hand.Yes,as the mob feels punishments should also be setting example to a certain extent for the prevention of these offences.Death by hanging is the ultimate punishment prescribed under CRPC(Criminal procedure code).Yes and the guarantor of constitution rightly awarded it.But,what is the use of beating a mad dog for its act of biting?? The beating actually enrages it.Instead treat the madness.A reader may be confused by the above conflicting statements. The "mad dog" I refer here is the "mind of men" and the act of biting I refer here is the "sexual offence committed".I always am inclined to the thought that God is not the creator but he is the creation himself, likewise the convict here is not the executor but the very originator of the thought which is the mind.So the treatment should be done there.A message to the society:
The above said treatment can never be done with the law alone. The requirement should begin with the mindset of the people. And with 63% of youth population in the world ,India can strikingly lead an example for the rest of the globe with the right understanding of the ethnic values which we naturally are embedded with. Finally I would like to conclude from my part saying this to my mothers, sisters and brothers."Education" is the keyword.I remember my school days where then existed a subject where a mere pass mark was the qualifier to be the topper with the scoring in the rest of the 'salary' earning subjects. And the subject was Moral science.Unfortunately our existing system of education gives a less thrust on this subject and certainly the same is encouraged by parents too.My fellow mates,I request hereby to spread the message of right moral education at the grass root level. And I sincerely hope that if at all you are in a position to read my blog, then you are on the fortunate side of having a liberal education under all moral purview. The same be spread to the so called "little runners" and the generation next may learn to live with peace in a dignified manner. Good men readers of my world of course can pledge to educate a 'girl' child of less fortune and thereby assuring the statement "Yes,we are men and we are proud of it".And my fellow sisters can pledge thereby to provide morale to the future sons for there exist no world without women and thereby assuring the right entitled to celebrate "International Women's day" with no head hung in shame.Happy women's day!!
"We act as if that being of a man or that being of a woman is actually an internal reality or something that is simply true about us, a fact about us, but actually it's a phenomenon that is being produced all the time and reproduced all the time, so to say gender is performative is to say that nobody really is a gender from the start."

Awesome thought.... especially those final words....
ReplyDeleteSo glad that a future civil servant's thoughts are channeled towards the dispelling of patriarchy.. Hope we head towards a future that is unbiased on gender
